Dust Collection System Troubleshooting

Diagnostic guide for identifying and resolving common dust collection system problems

Common Problems & Solutions

High Pressure Drop (5-8 inches WC or higher)

Causes:

  • Dirty filters - most common cause
  • Clogged or blocked ducts
  • Failed pulse jet cleaning
  • Accumulation of dust inside collector

Solutions:

  • Replace filters immediately - check filter life schedule
  • Inspect ductwork for blockages or debris
  • Test pulse jet cleaning system - verify compressed air pressure
  • Clean internal surfaces of collector using compressed air
  • Check for material bridges or compaction in hopper

Prevention: Follow regular filter replacement schedule based on pressure differential monitoring.

Low Airflow / Insufficient Dust Capture

Causes:

  • Undersized fan or motor failure
  • Damaged fan blades or impeller
  • Duct disconnections or leaks
  • Incorrect ductwork sizing

Solutions:

  • Check fan motor amperage - should match nameplate
  • Inspect fan for damage or corrosion
  • Test for duct leaks using smoke or soap solution
  • Verify all duct connections are secure
  • Calculate required CFM - system may be undersized

Prevention: Proper CFM sizing during design phase; regular visual inspections of ductwork.

Dust Leakage Around Collector

Causes:

  • Damaged or worn gaskets/seals
  • Loose bolts on cover or access doors
  • Worn or cracked filter housings
  • Improper filter installation

Solutions:

  • Inspect and replace worn gaskets
  • Tighten all bolts and fasteners evenly
  • Check filter seating - ensure proper installation
  • Inspect housing for cracks or damage
  • Verify filter specifications match collector

Prevention: Regular inspection during maintenance; use proper torque on fasteners; handle filters carefully.

Motor Won't Start or Runs Intermittently

Causes:

  • Electrical power issues
  • Tripped overload or thermal protection
  • Faulty motor capacitor
  • Bearing seizure or fan jam
  • Loose electrical connections

Solutions:

  • Check electrical power supply - verify voltage and phase
  • Check for tripped breakers or switches
  • Allow thermal protection to cool, then reset
  • Verify no debris blocking fan rotation
  • Check all electrical connections for looseness
  • Have qualified electrician test motor capacitor

Prevention: Maintain clean power supply; ensure proper grounding; professional electrical maintenance.

Unusual Noise or Vibration

Causes:

  • Bearing wear or failure
  • Misalignment of fan/motor
  • Loose bolts or fasteners
  • Debris in fan housing
  • Fan blade damage

Solutions:

  • Check and tighten all mounting bolts
  • Remove any debris from fan housing
  • Verify fan blade condition - no damage or cracks
  • Check bearing temperature - should not be hot
  • Listen for grinding noise indicating bearing failure

Prevention: Regular inspection; lubrication on schedule; alignment checks during installation.

Hopper Won't Empty / Material Compaction

Causes:

  • Material bridging in hopper
  • Moisture causing material to clump
  • Discharge gate stuck or corroded
  • Screw conveyor jam or failure
  • Hopper slope too shallow

Solutions:

  • Use compressed air to break up bridges from above
  • Manually remove compacted material if necessary
  • Test discharge gate operation - ensure smooth movement
  • Check screw conveyor for jamming - manually rotate by hand
  • Improve ventilation if moisture is issue

Prevention: Keep hopper clean; maintain proper ventilation; service discharge gates regularly.

When to Call a Professional

Contact a qualified technician if:
  • Motor won't start despite troubleshooting
  • Electrical system issues (power, controls)
  • Bearing failure suspected (grinding noise)
  • Structural damage to collector or ducts
  • Multiple problems occurring simultaneously
  • Pressure drop remains high after filter replacement
